Our new publication in eLife

Our laboratory has been collaborating with a Swedish group of developmental biologists since 2012 and our together research is focused on an explanation of the facial formation mechanism in vertebrates. The part of the results was published last year (read more: https://www.ceitec.eu/scientists-from-ceitec-but-in-collaboration-with-karolinska-institutet-contributed-to-the-explanation-of-the-mechanisms-responsible-for-face-formation-in-vertebrates/t3005). Further results are published now in prestigious eLife journal. Now, this is another important discovery: a description of the signaling pathways directly responsible for building various anatomical structures in the facial area.

The entire team collaborated on a series of genetic experiments on mouse embryos, where mutations of different genes and different stages of development were observed. Our CT team was responsible for 3D visualization and evaluation of digitized 3D models. We also managed to calculate exactly which parts of the cartilage are most affected and how they differ from each other. Thanks to the X-ray computed tomography technique, other soft tissues such as cerebral cortex or olfactory epithelium have been shown. Finally, these two structures have proved to be key in creating the signals shaping the future face.

The research was published in the eLife (IF 8.5), which is the second article in two years in this prestigious journal. "The strong multidisciplinary research team is the key to be successfull in internationational scientific field. Currently, significant research is impossible without the strong technical background we offer to developmental biologists, " said Professor Jozef Kaiser, leader of our research group.
